US TV host Elisabeth Hasselbeck had her views on gay marriage changed as a result of having dinner with lesbian singer Melissa Etheridge.
Hasselbeck, who hosts co-America’s popular show The View has surprised many by coming out as a supporter of gay marriage, despite her deeply conservative views on other matters.
Hasselbeck said that over dinner with Academy Award-winner Etheridge they “talked for hours about gay marriage, and I would really challenge people: Get out there. Instead of just talking about it and hating on it, actually talk to someone who’s loved someone else and have the conversation about what can be done.”
Hasselbeck, a campaigning Republican, said that she remains torn over the issue of abortion, stating that she believes that life begins at conception. But she tempered this comment, saying that she did not believe that it was the government’s place to tell women what to do with their bodies, and that she would “rather a change of heart than a change of law.”
The Examiner has reported that her comments have led her to be the recipient of public condemnations from anti-gay groups, who have called her religion into question.
